OBEDIENCE TITLES




Sun Dog Title Program  

Sun Dog offers Titles for the Bronze, Silver and Gold Star Obedience. The cost for testing is $30.00. (Testing for the Gold Star Title is included in the cost of the Advanced Obedience Lessons).  You will receive, upon meeting the minimum required points, a numbered  Certificate and a Star, (see picture).  Criteria for all three Titles are listed below along with field diagrams/scoresheets. You may re-test one time at no additional charge if you score less than the minimum required points. We feel that our test is a very real evaluation of your training. Criteria for Bronze Star

HEEL:

Over a 200 ft. distance the team will have to demonstrate the following:

a.         Left About Turn                                           (3 points)

b.         Right About Turn                                        (3 points)

c.         Left Turn                                                       (3 points)

d.         Right Turn                                                    (3 points)

e.         Weave Pattern (8 cones)                            (4 points)

f.          Heel between two approaching dogs       (4 points)

Total possible points: 20

 

SIT:

Team must perform 10 sits at 20 foot intervals over a 200 ft. distance. Each sit is worth 2 points.

Total possible points: 20

 

DOWN:

Handler must perform 5 downs at 20 foot intervals over a 100 ft. distance. Each down is worth 4 points.

Total possible points: 20

 
SIT/STAY:

(To be performed over a 100 foot distance.)

a.         Handler will leave the dog on a sit/stay at the orange cone, walk to the first flag and face the dog

            for 10 seconds. (5 points)

b.         Handler will advance to the next flag, turn and face the dog for 10 seconds. (5 points)

c.         Handler will move to the next flag, turn and face the dog for 15 seconds.  (5 points)

d.         Handler will move to the last flag, turn and face the dog for 15 seconds. Upon instructions from

            the steward, handler will return to the dog and pick up the leash. The dog must not break the sit.

(5 points)

Total possible points: 20

 

DOWN/STAY/RECALL:

The Handler will leave the dog on a down/stay at the orange cone. The handler will advance 100 ft. to the next cone, turn and recall the dog. The dog is to sit in front of or next to the handler  (20 points)

Total possible points: 20

Scoring Guidelines:

One point will be deducted for each additional command you use per exercise. Team must score a minimum of 80 points out of 100 points to receive the Bronze Star Title.

 

  

 

 

 

 Criteria For Silver Star

 HEEL:

 Team will demonstrate a heel on leash while completing the following tasks:

a.         Negotiate one figure eight around two cones set 4 feet apart, entering from any side handler chooses.     (5 points)

b.         Hurdle jump: dog must jump over an open hurdle while heeling next to handler. (5 points)

c.         Negotiate a second figure eight around two cones set 4 feet apart, entering from

            any side handler chooses.          (5 points)

d.        Heel past distraction. Dog must hold a correct heel while an honor dog crosses the

            path in front of them at the red flag. (5 points)

e.         The handlers dog must then jump up onto the table. The handler is then to down

            the dog. (10 points)

Total possible points: 30

 

STAY:

a.         Handler will place the dog on a sit/stay at Cone 1 and walk 20 feet to Cone 2, turn and face

             the dog. (5 points)

b.         After 15 seconds the handler will verbally down the dog. (5 points)

b.         After 15 seconds the handler will verbally sit the dog.  (5 points)

c.         Handler will leave the dog and go behind the blind for 20 seconds before returning. Dog must not break the stay.
            (15 points)

Total possible points: 30

 

OFF LEASH:

Handler will move to Cone 3 and remove the leash.

a.         Handler will down the dog, step over the dog and step back again.  (5 points)

b.         Handler will heel with the dog and negotiate a figure eight between two cones, entering from any direction.
            (5 points)

c.         Team will advance to the ladder. The dog must walk over the length of the ladder while holding a proper heel.
             At the end 
of the ladder the team will stop next to Cone 4. (5 points)

d.         At Cone 4 the handler will instruct his dog to stay and advance to the red flag. Handler will face the dog
            and then call the dog
to him/her. The dog must ignore the distraction, (helper will toss a ball), (10 points), and return
            in a straight line, passing
 through the double cones, (cones are set 2 feet apart), (10 points).  The dog must finish
            either in front of the handler or in a 
heel position. (5 points)

Total possible points: 40

 

Scoring Guidelines:    One point for each additional command will be deducted from each score. Failure at the hurdle jump will result in a loss of all points for that exercise, (5 points). A break by the dog in a stay while handler is out of sight will result in a loss of all points for that part of the exercise, (20 points). Team must score a minimum of 80 points out of a possible 100 points to receive the Silver Star Title.

 

 

 

 

 Criteria For Gold Star 

STAY/RECALL:

Team will start at the Dentist Office, next to the orange cone on the boardwalk. The handler will remove the leash from the dog and store it in a pocket.

a.         Handler will leave the dog on a sit/stay and walk into the Hotel, exiting out the back. The handler will then
            proceed to the orange cone next to Pony Express. (5 points)

b.         Handler will recall the dog. The dog must remain on the boardwalk  and return directly to the handler. (10 points)

Total possible points: 15

 

HAND SIGNALS:

Handler will heel with the dog to Cone 1. At Cone 1 the handler will down the dog, facing Cone 2.

Handler will leave the dog and walk 30 feet to Cone 2, turn and face the dog.

a.         Using hand signal only, handler will have the dog sit. (15 points)

b.         Using hand signal only, handler will down the dog. (15 points)

c.         Using hand signal only, handler will recall the dog.  (15 points)

Total possible points: 45

 

JUMP:

Team will advance to Cone 3. At Cone 3 the handler will leave the dog on a sit/stay and advance to the red flag behind the hurdles. Handler will point to the hurdle that the dog will be jumping.

a.         Handler will recall the dog over the hurdle using hand or verbal command. (10 points)

Total possible points: 10

 

HANDLER OUT OF SIGHT/RECALL:

Team will advance to Cone 4. At Cone 4 handler will place the dog on a sit/stay, leave the dog and enter Mae Wests. Handler will leave the door open and move out of sight of the dog.

a.         Handler will wait 30 seconds. Upon a signal from the steward, handler will recall the dog. The dog must
            return to the handler inside the building.  (10 points)

Total possible points: 10

 

HEEL:

Team will advance to Cone 5. Handler will place the dog on a sit.

a.         Handler is to heel with the dog through the cone weave, (8 cones set 3 feet apart). (10 points)

Total possible points: 10

 

 VEHICLE:

Team will advance to the red flag. Handler will place the dog on a sit/stay.

a.         Handler will leave the dog and enter the vehicle, closing the door and start the engine. Handler will then exit
            the vehicle and call the dog into the vehicle. Exercise is over once the dog is inside the vehicle and the door is shut (10 points)

Total possible points: 10

 

Scoring Guildelines:

If the dog breaks at any stay during the test, all points will be lost for that stay. Team must score a

minimum of 85 points out of 100 points to receive the Gold Star Title.
